Join Us at the Imagine A Day Without Water Festival on Thursday, Oct. 17, 2024

October 15, 2024

Metropolitan Sewer Subdistrict (MetroConnects) is partnering with Greer CPW, Greenville County Soil & Water Conservation District, Greenville Water, and Renewable Water Resources (ReWa) to highlight the true value of water. The US Water Alliance is celebrating 10 years of the Imagine a Day Without Water campaign, which brings together diverse participants to highlight how water is essential, invaluable, and in need of investment.

As recent weather events have highlighted, the nation is faced with a myriad of water challenges today. Much of the water infrastructure in the United States is more than 100 years old, and the impacts of aging and unrepaired pipes are evident in communities everywhere—in fact, a water main breaks every two minutes somewhere in this country. The effects of climate change are increasingly felt through water, whether scarcity or overabundance. And, though not well known, more than two million Americans still lack the dignity of access to water and wastewater services.

“Water is essential to human life,” said Carolyn Farr Shanesy, public relations manager for MetroConnects. “Together with our water, soil, and wastewater partners in Greenville County, we are working to ensure the protection of our public health, our environment, and our water. We hope that this festival will help all to remember the incredible role water plays in our lives and support our efforts to maintain and replace critical infrastructure to support our most precious resource — water.”

To commemorate this tenth anniversary, these water entities are holding an ”Imagine a Day Without Water” Festival in Unity Park on October 17 from 4-7 p.m. This event is free to the community and will include live music and food trucks while celebrating water and its impact on quality of life.

MetroConnects is addressing the urgent need to rehabilitate Greenville County’s aging water infrastructure, much of which is over 100 years old, as part of its Clean Water Forward initiative. The deteriorating sewer systems in historic areas like Mills Mill and Dunean Mill Village underscore the challenges of maintaining reliable water services in the face of outdated pipes and increasing demand.  By replacing and updating these systems, Clean Water Forward is working to protect water quality and create a sustainable, well-maintained, and reliable wastewater system.

About Clean Water Forward: Clean Water Forward is a Metropolitan Sewer Subdistrict (MetroConnects) initiative to address aging wastewater infrastructure and sewer capacity issues in Greenville County and to create a sustainable, well-maintained, and reliable wastewater system. One of the most critical aspects of Greenville’s aging infrastructure is buried underground. Out of sight, and usually out of mind, we are only reminded of the importance of wastewater systems when they fail. By strategically investing in these systems, we are helping to prevent that failure. The Clean Water Forward initiative is about maintaining and improving our quality of life, protecting our community’s public health, protecting the environment, and most importantly, protecting our water. About US WATER ALLIANCE: The US Water Alliance is a national membership organization advancing policies and programs to secure a sustainable One Water future for all.  Many of the traditional approaches and assumptions used over the past two centuries to design, build, and operate our existing water systems are insufficient to meet present needs. The US Water Alliance unites voices across the water sector, fostering collaboration and activating bold leadership to address the array of current issues the sector faces and effectively advance a One Water future.
