Meet Andrew

Today is National Intern Day, and we’re celebrating our engineering intern, Andrew Lozier! Originally from Nebraska, Andrew is currently attending Clemson University as a civil engineering major. As the first engineer in his family, Andrew became interested in the field during his time in a STEM academy program at his high school. There, he designed houses in AutoCAD and a multi-family development near a minor-league baseball stadium for his senior capstone project.

Andrew first discovered MetroConnects through Clemson University’s Career Center job portal. He was intrigued by the job description and eager to experience a hands-on approach to learning about engineering in the real world. This summer, Andrew worked alongside our engineering team as they problem-solved and planned MetroConnects’ many projects. He especially enjoyed getting to work on capacity requests and plan reviews, each project more detailed and different from the next. These experiences allowed Andrew to strengthen his plan-reading skills and recognize elements that carry over from each project, helping him become comfortable and confident in his abilities.

One of the highlights of Andrew’s internship has been the balance of in-office and field experience, which gave him the chance to see how engineers collaborate and interact in real time. He observed how engineering teams communicate, problem-solve, and manage their time during each project. Andrew appreciates the ability to analyze and talk through a project, acknowledging that there isn’t always an obvious or a single correct solution to any one project. He encourages any engineering student seeking an internship to consider MetroConnects, saying, “They let you participate in your learning—seeing the before, during, and after of a project, both on paper and in person.”

We’re so grateful that Andrew spent his summer with us, and we know he’ll do amazing work wherever his path takes him next!

Working At MetroConnects

MetroConnects launched the paid internship program last year with the aim of bringing more awareness of the wastewater sector to students and help grow the workforce. The goal is to drive more emerging engineers and project managers into the sector and provide on-the-job training. The wastewater world is one that is often overlooked, but the infrastructure we provide is critical to the the health and economy of a community.
